1. Who She Is

Katya was the only person who could challenge Anton without making him withdraw. She did not share his military worldview, but she understood machines well enough to know when institutions were lying about them. She understood why he flew. She never accepted that the reason made the cost inevitable.

She met him in October 2005 at a recovery facility outside Cinigrad, where she had come to sit with an uncle who was not going to recover. She found him at three in the morning in the common area, taking his sidearm apart and putting it back together.

KATYA: "You're going to wear out the springs." ANTON: "Better the springs than my hands." KATYA: "Are your hands shaking?" ANTON: "Not anymore."

They talked for four hours. They married eight months later.

2. What She Knew and When

DateKnowledge
18 Jun 2025Her husband died in a "training accident." She did not answer the second call. At 20:00 there was honey cake on the table with eighteen unlit candles. Irina kept saying "He promised." Katya answered: "He tried."
Early 2026The casualty abstract is an engineering impossibility: mechanical failure without wreckage; cockpit trauma language inconsistent with a crash; sealed pressure-breach references. "They are not hiding how he died. They are hiding what survived him."
2028She learns about MINOZIS when the Task Force needs her. She becomes the first civilian engineer to show that the official account was incompatible with the fatigue pattern in the abstract.
Oct 2028Liaison Instrument. She withholds nothing.
2029Fatigue analysis of the repaired MNZ-41 identifies the port-side panel line as its most probable structural failure point under thermal shock.

The machine kept her husband's body alive as hardware. She is the person who identifies where the hardware will fail.

3. Psychology

Katya's grief is not soft. It is engineering. She deals with loss by finding where the load went. Her anger is directed at institutions, not at Anton and not at the machine:

"They asked me if I blamed him for going. I said no. I blame them for making him choose between his conscience and his family. He chose conscience. That was who he was. I loved him for it. I hate them for forcing it."

She does not believe the residue is Anton, and she does not believe it is not. She refuses to let other people decide that for her.

4. Arc in the Campaign

StageBeat
Act II briefingsHer structural findings appear as Intelligence Ledger entries that unlock the RCS hotspot and seam tactics
M06 HarborShe and Irina fly toward Albatross to work with the squadron. POSTHUMUS attacks the transport. She hears her husband's voice say a word from her own kitchen.
Between M06 and M09She asks to meet the pilots. She tells Vance she does not need to be forgiven by anyone in the family, because nobody in the family ever blamed her. Vance does not accept it.
M09 Anchor in the StormThe Task Force authorizes a Tier 3 high-emotional-index trigger. She volunteers to deliver it herself, live, on the open channel: "You have a harbor." She says one more thing after the authorized line.

Her decision in M09 is the moral center of the finale. She is using the love the machine kept him alive with to bring the machine down. She knows exactly what she is doing, and it is the difference between her harbor and General Resource's.

5. Writing Katya

  • Precise, technical vocabulary used without showing off.
  • She asks the question behind the question ("What you are actually asking is whether I will let you admit it").
  • She does not cry in scenes. She has done that already, offscreen, for four years.
  • When she softens, it is with one image, never a speech.
